Rhythms And Roots

Sarah Kurbjuweit

March 17–April 12, 2023

Rhythms and Roots explores the search for anchors in a fast-paced, globalized, and fragmented world. Inspired by the seasons of the liturgical year, the exhibit blends the symbols, forms, and colours of medieval-era stained glass windows to express how emotional markers like ritual and rhythm, joy and grief, and anticipation and fulfillment grant the rootless access into something much bigger than themselves. It is a personal story of cross-cultural transition and the loss of friendships framed in tangible daily, weekly, and yearly rhythms of sacred time and space.

Sarah Kurbjuweit is an artist currently pursuing her MA in Theological Studies at Regent College, Vancouver. She earned a BA in English and American Studies and Scandinavian Studies in Germany, where she grew up, then worked for many years in the Biblical Studies Department of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in North America and Asia. Sarah has collaborated with other artists on several occasions and organized art exhibitions on different YWAM campuses. In recent years, she developed a special interest for medieval cathedrals and stained glass, and is exploring ways to create and incorporate liturgical art in personal and public spaces.
