Under the Sun

Davi Rabelo

April 21–May 3, 2021
The show is a visual exploration that draws on biblical types and shadows to express some of the hopes and sorrows of life under the sun. Rooted in Scriptures and Brazilian culture, it is a personal journey of a pastor, graphic designer, and visual artist making sense of reality while
grappling with the possibilities and tensions of the Gospel and his own culture. By, exploring typology and typography, brings together word and image in a universe that is rich, complex, and that recognizes the brokenness of this world. Images of Brazilian landscapes, with its tropical climate and typical fauna and flora, merge with biblical metaphors for creation, fall, and redemption. They are meant to express how the ordinary is met by the sacred, and the temporal infused with the eternal in light of Christ’s work. The contrasts in the themes are depicted through the choice of few contrasting colours: primarily black, white, and gold. Made entirely of linocuts, a relief-printing process, the images are carved out and printed all by hand creating unique visual pieces.

Creation is an act of love and sacrifice. This image is a depiction of the Ipê tree as the Tree of Life, along with other symbolic elements. The Ipê is a characteristic tree from central Brazil, that has exuberant flowers and deep roots. It only blooms during wintertime, when is usually very hot and dry. During this period, the vegetation loses its colour, and the landscape looks lifeless, and that is when the Ipê blooms with its radiant yellow colours showing that life still is present even in the harshest environments, transforming our landscapes. It is a reminder that God is still at work, even when everything seems lifeless, dull, and opaque. The image also takes inspiration from the old English poem “Dream of the Rood, which presents the crucifixion from the tree’s perspective. The cathedral arches are a reminder that creation itself is God’s temple, where he dwells with his people and will be restored at the end.

This image plays with our conceptions of what is life and death, and how our realities are reframed in the light of God’s work. The story of Jonah is a universal narrative that resonates with all of us. For Jonah, salvation came from the most unexpected of places. As the prophet goes deeper into the heart of the sea, he finds the light. “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” (Matthew 16:25). This apparent paradox is illustrated by the whale that could be either breaching or diving, as revealed by the upside-down boat. The biblical story is represented by a humpback whale, a common species on the Brazilian shores, and the jangada, a small raft commonly used by fishermen.

The Good Shepherd (O Bom Pastor)
Davi Rabelo

This version of the iconic image of the Good Shepherd is reinterpreted as the shepherd characterized as a rural worker from a Brazilian countryside tending his sheep. It also takes inspiration from the novel “Vidas Secas” (Barren Lifes) by Graciliano Ramos, in which a family of migrants is fleeting from severe drought, in search of food, land, and shelter. However, here the Shepherd is the shade that protects from the harsh sun. His humble appearance is contrasted with the universe that he carries under his cape. “Eu sou tua Sombra” means “I am your shadow” and is a direct reference to Psalm 121.

This scene depicts a well-known street of Brasilia which concentrates most of the city's governmental buildings and tourist attractions. However, the image focuses on the crooked tree, common in the cerrado (savanna biome), between governmental ministry buildings and the city’s Cathedral. The crooked tree here is meant to be a metaphor for the cross, a symbol of both reconciliation and judgment. Its placement between these two spheres of human experience, faith, and government, is meant to provoke a reflection on the ambiguities and tensions between the church and state in our country. The intense sun adds a dramatic tone to the scene, revealing the complexities of these relationships.

This image depicts the city of Goiás, a historical city known for its vibrant cultural and religious life, a place that I have many childhood memories of. “Sou a pedra que se prende a tua casa” (I am the stone that sustains your house) is an adapted verse from the Brazilian poet Cora Coralina, natural of Goiás. The stones form the city landscape and streets, and it points to Christ as the sustainer of all life and his church, as a reference to Matthew 16:18.

In the Sermon of the Mount, Jesus tells his disciples to consider the bird in the air, and the lilies and flowers in the field as they are fed and sustained by the Lord. Similarly, we are invited to enter into his rest and place our concerns and anxieties before him, knowing that we are in his good hands. This image, therefore, is an invitation to reconsider our existence in the light of Jesus’ words and to reflect on how we toil under the sun.

For John Calvin, creation has an epiphanic and pedagogical purpose as it teaches the church in the “school of the beasts” with an eloquent herald that reveals his glory, beauty, and wisdom. Here, I depict a few animals that constitute part of the magnificent fauna of central Brazil, such as the onça pintada (Jaguar), the lobo-guará (Guara Wolf) and the toucan. My intent is not only to highly the beauty in our fauna but also to reflect on how we deal with the natural world, given that some of these are endangered species due to human predation.

Inspired by Augustine’s City of God, “Dance of Eternity” is meant to express the continuities and discontinuities between human culture and eternal realities that give shape to this world. In the image, the famous National Theatre of Brasilia, which hosts many significant concerts, plays, performances are contrasted and complemented by the stary skies which dance to the song of the universe.

John’s gospel opens with Christological interpretation to the creation narrative from Genesis, pointing to Jesus as the living Word, whose light shines in the darkness. In this Gospel, we also have eight of Jesus’ I am sayings, one of which is “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12). This piece is meant to use just typography (word) as a means to express this reality, displaying the golden letters on a dark background. Jesus not only claims for himself to be the light of the world but calls his church to be the same. Inspired by iconography, this unique typography explores the intersection of church tradition and its aesthetics with modern typefaces.

In continuity with the theme of “I am” sayings, this piece also focuses on the declaration and event of Jesus as the Resurrection and the Life. The empty tomb receives and irradiates light into the darkness, revealing life where once was death. This piece has a lighter and darker version revealing the multifaceted nature of God’s redemptive work.

The Gardner (O Jardineiro)
Davi Rabelo

Image size: 4x6”

Paper size: 8x10”

Printed on Strathmore printmaking paper 280g/m2

Price: $50 Framed

This image was made in the early stages of the pandemic as our family would go for a short and visit the community garden. With our kids, we would admire the flowers blooming, the vegetables and fruits starting to grow in the early spring. Even though we were surrounded by uncertainties and anxiety, the beauty and life of that garden were a reminder that God was still actively nourishing his creation. Borrowing symbolic elements from iconography, this linocut print, was made as a personal reflection that Christ (ICXC) is the one who creates and ultimately sustains our lives. These strange times reveal our frailty, the brokenness of this world, and our need for a real hope that recognizes and confronts the deathliness that haunts us. Yet, there is still beauty to be found in God’s garden.

Not for sale.

The print I made a month ago after saying goodbye to a very dear friend. He passed away after a long battle against cancer. Inspired by his favorite song during this period (Oceans – Hillsong) and Isaiah 43, this was a mere attempt to express some of the emotions, sorrows, and hopes in face of that tragic reality. It reveals a God wounded by the human experience, that reaches out and offers grace and salvation amid turmoil.

The Good Shepherd is also the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. This piece inspired by the Christian liturgy is a reminder that the lamb who was slain, is also exalted and occupies the throne of the universe. “For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; 'he will lead them to springs of living water.' 'And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.'" (Rv 7:17)
