Jerry Whitehead

Jerry Whitehead—from the Cree nation and a member of the James Smith band—was born in Kinistino, Saskatchewan. The first drawings he can remember doing were on paper grocery bags and on catalogues with the tip of a 22-caliber bullet and ash sticks from a fire. His first introduction to colour was through his mother’s braiding of brightly coloured rugs. When he was growing up, the colour, power, and fluidity of the pow-wow dancers also made a lasting impression on him. These dancers have formed the backbone of his passionate, lively, and highly original art. Whitehead is a graduate of the University of Regina (BA) and the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design (BFA). His eight years of formal training are evident in his use of colour, movement, and control in his compositions.
