This image plays with our conceptions of what is life and death, and how our realities are reframed in the light of God’s work. The story of Jonah is a universal narrative that resonates with all of us. For Jonah, salvation came from the most unexpected of places. As the prophet goes deeper into the heart of the sea, he finds the light. “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” (Matthew 16:25). This apparent paradox is illustrated by the whale that could be either breaching or diving, as revealed by the upside-down boat. The biblical story is represented by a humpback whale, a common species on the Brazilian shores, and the jangada, a small raft commonly used by fishermen.
