John’s gospel opens with Christological interpretation to the creation narrative from Genesis, pointing to Jesus as the living Word, whose light shines in the darkness. In this Gospel, we also have eight of Jesus’ I am sayings, one of which is “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12). This piece is meant to use just typography (word) as a means to express this reality, displaying the golden letters on a dark background. Jesus not only claims for himself to be the light of the world but calls his church to be the same. Inspired by iconography, this unique typography explores the intersection of church tradition and its aesthetics with modern typefaces.
